It is not a difficult thing for the succulent plants to spend the winter safely, because there is nothing difficult in the world but afraid of people with hearts. It is believed that the planters who dare to raise succulent plants must be ‘caring people‘. According to the differences between the north and south, master the temperature, light and humidity, the succulent plants can be tender and plump in winter.

Temperature

When the daytime temperature is lower than 0 , the succulent plants will stop growing and appear a similar dormant state. In fact, this is a “low temperature reaction” that most plants have, which is different from its “physiological dormancy period”. Therefore, succulent plants will continue to grow if it can maintain a suitable temperature in winter.

There is a difference between north and south. If the temperature in a heated room in the north can be kept around 20 degrees, the plants will not stop growing. In the south, even succulent such as evergreen grass and sedum should be placed in the sunny leeward.

Please be noted that never put plants on or near the radiator, which is a big taboo in winter maintenance. The radiator is like a “dryer”, which will roast the plants to death.

In the south, there is no heating facilities, and the air humidity is also high. You can put the succulent plants on the south facing balcony collectively, and remember to turn the pots  regularly to get even sunshine. If it rains or snows for several consecutive days, do not suddenly move to the sun when it is sunny, so that the plants will not be able to adapt at once. In addition, efforts should be made to control humidity to prevent wet freezing injury.

Finally, let’s summarize the guidelines for safe wintering temperature of succulent plants:

1. If the outdoor temperature is lower than 5 , take it indoors or in the balcony.

2. When the outdoor temperature in the windy area is lower than 10 degrees, the succulent plants such as Aeonium and Cotyledon undulata should be quickly returned to the room.

3. The lowest temperature in the indoor environment is higher than 0 , which is safe for succulent plants.

4. If the minimum temperature can be kept above 10 in winter, the succulent plants will grow normally.

5. Some open bred varieties are cold resistant, and there is no problem within minus 15 degrees: perennial grass, sedum grass

6. In the bleak and cold areas in the south, there is no too much pressure for outdoor cultivation when the temperature is below – 5 to 0 for a short time. (not seedlings)

Light

In order to survive the winter safely, lighting and ventilation must be taken into account. No matter how well the heat preservation is done, the lack of photosynthesis will also lead to the overgrowth of plants.

Even in the dormant period, succulent plants also have certain requirements for light. If they are lacking, the plants will be weak and their resistance will decline. Even if they do not die at that time, they will also appear ill and unable to exert their strength in the next growth season. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the place with the longest lighting time to place succulent plants in winter.

Humidity

Watering less can increase the concentration of plant cells and also enhance its cold resistance. Watering should also be done at noon when the sun is warm. The frequency of watering should be based on the environment.

In fact, the difference between the north and the south is not very big. The key is the size of the plant state. If it is a weak seedling, it needs more water. You can water it frequently and keep the soil a little moist. And try to put them in a warmer place, a more stable environment. However, the resistance of large adult succulent plants will be much stronger, so they must be watered less. Especially strong plants can even be without a drop of water for a month.

The most suitable way to water in the north is spraying for both young plants and adult plants. At the same time, you can clean the dust on the leaf surface, which is more conducive to the healthy growth of plants. It was also found that water spraying can make succulent plants color faster. The seedlings are watered frequently and sparingly, and the adult plants can be watered once every 15-20 days. Of course, this cannot be constant. The environment of every family is different. If the heating in the home is awesome, it may need watering once every 4-5 days.

In addition, fertilization and pot changing are not recommended in cold seasons, and they should not be disturbed as much as possible. Rootless propagation, cutting and leaf cutting are not recommended in winter. It is better to buy adult plants for maintenance.

In general, pay close attention to the changes in temperature, light and humidity, and take corresponding measures in time, so that your succulent plants can survive the winter safely.
