The Fujian Forestry Department disclosed that the export of flower and plants reached US$164.833 million in 2020, an increase of 9.9% over 2019. It successfully “turned crises into opportunities” and achieved steady growth in adversity.

The person in charge of the Fujian Forestry Department stated that in the first half of 2020, affected by the COVID-19 epidemic at home and abroad, the international trade situation of flower and plants has become extremely complicated and severe. The flower and plants exports, which have been continuously growing steadily, have been severely impacted. There is a serious backlog of a large number of export products such as ginseng ficus, sansevieria, and related practitioners have suffered heavy losses.

Take Zhangzhou City, where the annual flower and plants exports accounted for more than 80% of the province’s total plant exports as an example. March to May of the previous year was the city’s peak flower and plants export period. The export volume accounted for more than two-thirds of the total annual exports. Between March and May 2020, the city’s flower exports dropped by nearly 70% compared with the same period in 2019. Due to the suspension of international flights, shipping and other logistics, the flower and plants export enterprises in Fujian Province had orders of approximately USD 23.73 million that could not be fulfilled on time and faced a huge risk of claims.

Even if there is a small amount of exports, they often encounter various policy obstacles in importing countries and regions, causing unpredictable losses. For example, India requires flower and plants imported from China to be quarantined for nearly half a month before they can be released after they arrive; the United Arab Emirates requires flower and plants imported from China to be quarantined before they can go ashore for inspection, which significantly prolongs the transportation time and seriously affects the survival rate of the plants.

Until May 2020, with the overall implementation of various policies for epidemic prevention and control, social and economic development, the domestic epidemic prevention and control situation has gradually improved, plant companies have gradually stepped out of the impact of the epidemic, and flower and plants exports have also entered the right track and achieved Rise against the trend and hit new highs repeatedly.

In 2020, Zhangzhou’s flower and plant exports reached US$90.63 million, an increase of 5.3% over 2019. The main export products such as ginseng ficus, sansevieria, pachira, anthurium, chrysanthemum, etc. are in short supply, and various foliage plants and their tissue culture seedlings are also “hard to find in one container.”

As of the end of 2020, the flower planting area in Fujian Province reached 1.421 million mu, the total output value of the entire industry chain was 106.25 billion yuan, and the export value was 164.833 million US dollars, an increase of 2.7%, 19.5% and 9.9% year-on-year respectively.

As a key production area for exporting plants, Fujian’s flower and plants exports exceeded Yunnan for the first time in 2019, ranking first in China. Among them, the export of potted plants has remained the first in the country for 9 consecutive years. In 2020, the output value of the entire flower and seedling industry chain will exceed 1,000. 100 million yuan.
